Alum Martin E. Mullen, Jr. Leaves Significant Gift

The Most Rev. Paul S. Coakley, Bishop of Salina announced today that the Endowment Foundation of Thomas More Prep – Marian High School was included in the estate of the late Martin E. Mullen, Jr. The Endowment Foundation will receive approximately $2.6 million from the estate. Mullen graduated from St. Joseph’s Military Academy in 1945.
"This very sizable bequest is an eloquent testimony to the quality and value of Catholic education that our schools have offered for generations in Hays. We are profoundly grateful for this extraordinary gift as well as for the continuing generosity of all of our alumni and benefactors,” said Bishop Coakley of the gift.
The announcement was made today during a special luncheon for benefactors and supporters of Thomas More Prep-Marian High School and Holy Family Elementary, both in Hays. The luncheon is part of Homecoming activities for Thomas More Prep – Marian High School.
“We are very grateful to Mr. Mullen for remembering his high school in his estate. It is the generosity of alumni and friends that help us support the mission of Thomas More Prep-Marian High School, a Christian community in the Catholic tradition, which challenges its students to spiritual growth, academic excellence, and leadership formation,” said Tim Werth, president of the Thomas More Prep – Marian School Board of the announcement.
A native of Dormont, PA, Mr. Mullen attended St. Joseph’s Military School during his junior and senior years of high school. After graduation from high school he entered the United States Army in November, 1945. After being discharged from the army in 1947, Mullen attended Duquesne University and achieved a degree in 1951. Mullen worked for many years for the Central Intelligence Agency, serving in South Vietnam. After resigning from the CIA he returned to Los Angeles, CA where he returned to school at Cal State Los Angeles and earned a masters degree in English. He taught high school and college courses until his retirement. He passed away on June 19, 2008.
Members of the 1945 classes from St. Joseph’s Military Academy and Girls Catholic High joined other alumni and supporters of the school to celebrate the announcement. The funds will be invested in the Endowment Foundation and the earnings will be used to further education at Thomas More Prep-Marian High School.
