Soccer Team Returns Victorious from Salina

The Monarch boys soccer team journeyed to Salina on Saturday to play a 4 pm contest against the Muleskinners of St. Johns Military Academy. St. Johns came out roaring as they dominated the game throughout most of the first half and scored the first goal in the contest about halfway through the first 40 minute period. Their aggressive play (which was NOT evident when they played us about a week or so ago) helped to keep the Monarchs at bay until just before the half when we scored our first goal to even the score. In the second half, the Monarchs were able to manufacture a goal only to see St. Johns return the favor several minutes later to knot the score at two. The contest went down to the wire where the offense for the Monarchs finally took charge and scored their third goal of the game and iced the victory. Scoring for the Monarchs were Toto Murin and Michel Gonzalez, with some good assists by Sonyag Khatri, Dong You, and Drew O'Brien. The key moment in the game came when the coaches decided to bring Drew O'Brien out of goal and put him in the middle at the start of the second half. His size and speed proved the difference as the St. Johns players could not handle him as easily as they had some of our other players. On the defensive end Carlos Duenes, Colby Schippers, and Kaleb Stark led a unified effort to keep the Muleskinners at bay in the waning minutes of the contest.

The win evens the season record to 4-4 going into next Tuesdays contest with Great Bend at home.  Then, due to a schedule change, the team will travel to Elbing-Berean Academy on Saturday October 8th instead to Friday the 7th as listed on the schedule.   --DH

On a blustery, cool, Thursday afternoon last week, the TMP Monarchs engaged in a soccer contest with the visitors from Nickerson and dominated the game with a resounding 9-1 win.  Several Monarchs scored for our side including Lane Fisher (two goals) who is still learning his role on the team. It is always fun to see the younger guys see success early in their careers. Hopefully, the other freshmen will step up in the coming weeks to contribute to the team's success. Many have already contributed valuable minutes and will continue to do so the rest of the season.   --DH

    Soccer Season Begins with Victory

The boys' soccer team launched the new season on Tuesday evening with a contest at Nickerson and came away with a convincing 7-0 victory to start the season with a 1-0 record.
After jumping out to a 1-0 lead in the first half, the Monarchs were able to score 6 more times in the second half to reach the final tally. Partially because of the heat and due to a strong Monarch defensive stand, Nickerson could never really mount any threat though they did get 3 shots on goal.
Those players who scored for the visiting Monarchs were Colby Schippers (2) and Collan Lawson, Michel Gonzalez, Lane Fisher, Eduardo Chavez, and Eric Choi (1 each).
The Monarchs again be on the road next week as they participate in the McPherson Tournament, meeting McPherson Tuesday at 6 pm to start tournament play.
