Patricia Newell, ’63

Patricia Jean Newell, 76, passed away at home on Sunday, March 7, 2021, after a battle with cancer.  She was born March 2, 1945, in Hays, KS, to Lillian (Coupal) and Clarence Grabbe.

She graduated from Fort Hays State University with a BS in Elementary Education in 1967.  On June 17, 1967, she married LeRoy Newell at St. Joseph’s Church in Hays, KS.  She taught 2nd grade for one year at Bazine, KS, and then stayed home to raise her family.  She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother.  She enjoyed sewing, baking, making rosaries, and playing the piano and organ.  She was a member of the Catholic Daughters of Americas, Shepherds of Christ Ministries, and an Extraordinary Minister for St. Mary’s Church.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by her children Patrick Newell (Cindy), Tim Newell, Stephanie Heier (Roger), Jodie Newell, Kevin Newell (Kara), Mary Ewing (John), Sean Newell (Holly), Mark Newell (Jessica) and Sarah Labes (William), 25 grandchildren; her siblings Frances Gordon (Jim), Donna Farrell (Bob), Wayne Grabbe (Judy), Dick Grabbe (Cheryl) and Lorri Leibbrandt (Doug); brother-in-law, Sam Warfel and sister-in-law, Kathy Grabbe; and was preceded in death by her parents and siblings Marian Warfel and David Grabbe.
