The TMP-Marian Chess Team travelled to Washburn Rural in Topeka Saturday to compete in a traditionally-strong tournament there. Competition was close from the beginning, with three teams tied after the first round, After two rounds, the leaders were within 1/2 point, but TMP pulled narrowly ahead in Round 3. A difficult fourth round left our team 3 points behind, but a strong fifth round pulled us back to within 1/2 point. And that's where it remained after Round 6. Chanute High School won first-place team with 14 1/2 points; TMP was second with 14 points; host team Washburn Rural finished third with 12 1/2 points. Senior Blaise Staab finished first among placing teams with 4 1/2 individual points, but three individual players finished ahead of him, so he took home the fourth-place medal.
The Chess Team will be competitively idle for the next two Saturdays, but then will return to action at Valley Center on November 1st, Jay Shideler (the Washburn Rural elementary school) in Topeka again on November 8, and Trinity High School in Hutchinson on November 15. Go, Monarchs!

Competition was close from the beginning. While TMP led the whole tournament, it was only by 1/2 to 1 point. In the final round, however, victories on ten of our twelve boards helped us pull away to finish with 20 team points. Finishing second was Valley Center with 16 1/2 points, the host team Ellinwood was third with 15 points, and Riley County finished with 14 points.
Individually, Senior Blaise Staab finished first with an undefeated record of 6 wins, no losses, and no draws, including victories over the 2nd and 3rd Place individual finishers. In a three-way tie for 2nd - 4th, Senior Eli Stein placed 4th with 5 wins and 1 loss. Finishing out the top four (because the team score in team chess events is the scores of the top four players from a team) were Freshman Caden Pinkney and Sophomore Ethan Gibson, with 4 wins, 1 loss, and 1 draw (4 1/2), finishing 5th and 6th respectively.
Providing support were Sophomores Cade Schlautman (10th), 8th Graders Joshua Marintzer (12th), Alex Unrein (13th), and Braden Unrein (14th). Also competing from TMP were 8th Grader Garret Billinger (18th, 3 1/2 pts.), Sophomore Colby Schmeidler (20th, 3 1/2 pts.), Sophomore Dylan Billinger (22nd, 3 pts.) and Sophomore James Dickman (32nd, 3 pts.).
Next week, TMP travels to Washburn Rural, another close rival in state competition.
